About Us

The Student Managed Investment Fund was set up in 2000 and the first group of students started trading in February 2000. Since then the Student Managed Investment Fund has grown in stature and is one of the most popular programs in the School. It has attracted widespread attention from the media and has been featured in all major Connecticut newspapers, television channels, and the CNN.

At the School of Business, the outreach program is critical to attracting the best students. Students value the opportunity to interact with the business world and the alumni. This not only gives them practical experience, it helps their job search. The program also gives the alumni the opportunity to participate in the School’s programs, and to come back to their alma mater. It also helps the School’s fund raising drive.

In the last few years, several outreach programs have been developed and most of them have produced the desired results. Student Managed Investment Fund is one such program where the benefits have been particularly impressive. It gives the students valuable and hands on experience in stock selection and portfolio management. Past managers tell us that prospective employers spend a lot of time discussing students’ participation in the Student Managed Investment Fund.

The Student Managed Investment Fund was started with an endowment of $1m from the UConn Foundation. The various parameters of the program and the Prospectus were developed in consultation with Kevin Edwards of the UConn Foundation. We conducted extensive research and survey over a two year period studying similar programs in other universities across the country. At its inception, the Student Managed Investment Fund was one of the largest funds managed by students.

The administrative process of Student Managed Investment Fund involves selection of the students in early Spring for management during following Fall and Spring, meeting the group of undergraduate and graduate students every week to discuss strategy and preparing reports, arranging meeting with the UConn Foundation Board of Trustees and the Student Managed Investment Fund Investment Advisory Board (IAB) several times a year, execute the trades, and manage the account with Charles Schwab. In addition, we also offer courses on valuation for both Undergraduate (taught by Patrick Terrion over fall and Spring) and MBA managers (taught by Chinmoy) to help in their decision making.

The Student Managed Investment Fund has been featured by Hartford Courant (twice), and on the Connecticut CBS and NBC channels. It received international exposure when it was featured in CNN two years ago.

Student Managed Investment Fund is an unique and valuable program for the School of Business and it serves several functions, including the following:

Student Managed Investment Fund enhances the visibility of School of Business among prospective undergraduate and MBA students, and it has improved quality of incoming students. Indeed, it is a very popular program with the students and consistently attracts some of the most meritorious students in the School of Business. It has been a powerful recruiting and placement tool for the School.

It has made significant contribution towards promoting program excellence. The Student Managed Investment Fund program gives the students the rare opportunity to apply the concepts they learn in the classroom to real life valuation. The Student Managed Investment Fund program is a joint effort which encompasses the UConn Foundation, School of Business, Department of Finance, and most importantly, the Alumni. The Student Managed Investment Fund Investment Advisory Board (IAB) includes some of the most successful School of Business alums and they have strongly endorsed the value of Student Managed Investment Fund to the overall improvement of the School.
